On the Ionian side of Lecce along the Taranto-Gallipoli
coast you can see Porto Cesareo, a village of fishermen
that boasts ancient origins. The present centre developped
around the homonymous sixteenth-century tower built
on Charles the 5th request in order to protect the town
against the Turkish invasions, but the oldest built-up
area ? as the many different archaeological evidences
which belong to the settlements of Strea and Scala di
Furno establish ? was probably founded by the Romans
with the name Cesaria in a place crowded since the Neolithic,
and probably even where Portus Sasinae of the Japigi
stood. With the Norman domination and then that of the
Angevins, Porto Cesario eventually became, together
with the nearby Gallipoli, very important from a strategical
point of view for the power over the South of Italy
and then, as all of the rest of the Salentos estates,
it was taken over by the Aragonese, together with the
Orsini Del Balzo and the Acquaviva.
